In recent conversations with writers, I've been asked a particular question a few times:

"I have an idea for a book, but I'm not quite sure the direction I want to go and don't even know if there is a market for this topic. What do I do?"

My answer was this: Use your blog! This is just one of the many examples of the fact that a blog is a critical weapon in the writer's armory. This is where you connect with your readers (your tribe) instantly. You can blog about the topic on which you're considering writing a full length book and gauge the response you get.

Even if you aren't sure the direction you'd like to take with a topic, or even what the scope of the book should be, this is where you can work those things out. Let your readers' feedback be your guide to what they want to hear more about. If you are writing a business book on How to Grow Your Market Share, for instance, you'll want to know the specific areas in which most business owners are looking for advice. Your blog readers, probably primarily made up of business owners, will tell you exactly what they are looking for and your book will be all the more relevant.

You don't believe me that your blog readers will buy a book filled with information they've already received on your blog?

Here's an example: Platform by Michael Hyatt. This book is based on information he shares very generously for FREE on his blog. But, it was packaged differently, new information added, and several freebies were offered when he launched it. Platform became a NY Times bestseller in 2012.

Blogging a book works for fiction as well. If you have an idea for a novel but are having trouble with character development or the plausibility of the setting you've created, blog a short story using those characters and setting. You can get feed back right there that will help you in when you are writing your novel.

Some novelists are even publishing an ebook of the first chapter of their novel as a short story, getting feedback through their websites and reviews, and then making changes before they put out the next chapter. That takes to the next level, don't you think?

So take your idea to the people. You'll have a better book in the end and may sell a few "pre-ordered" copies along the way.
On Saturday, the Center for Women here in Charleston, S.C., held their monthly Womens Writers Forum. The guest speaker was David Symonds, General Manager of CreateSpace, the self-publishing arm of Amazon.com.

First of all, let's just say more often than not, living in Charleston doesn't allow for access to people like David. Typically, companies (large and small) in the publishing world aren't located in South Carolina.
New York? Yes.
L.A? Sure.
Chicago? Sometimes.
Charleston? Um, no.

CreateSpace, however, is located in North Charleston, S. C. I was thrilled at the opportunity to hear from David without travelling to a conference to ask him my questions directly.

David and his colleagues were informative, knowledgeable, and willing to answer even the toughest questions to the best of their abilities. First, he reviewed the process of publishing a book with CreateSpace from start to finish. Then he discussed royalties, and finished with a Q&A session. Needless to say, tough topics came up like the Indie bookstores' boycott of Amazon products, the lack of returnability of CreateSpace products, and lack of access to Amazon Canada, just to name a few.

Here are my takeaways:

1. CreateSpace is just about as easy as it gets for new authors to upload a book, create a cover and hit publish. Now we all know that ease is not the most important thing when it comes to self-publishing, but for someone like me who has used other Print on Demand companies, ease is a welcome change. Who doesn't want easy?

2. CreateSpace (print books) and Kindle Direct Publishing (ebooks published for the Kindle) are NOT the same thing. While they are both owned by Amazon and work together, an author must create an account with both companies and upload your document to both companies. Definitely a downside when you are looking for a streamlined service.

3. Amazon Canada is not part of the distribution options when you publish with CreateSpace, yet Amazon Europe is. Is that a big deal? I think so.

4. Expanded Distribution is optional for $25. This means Amazon will make sure you are listed with Ingram and Baker & Taylor. But, let's face it, the chance that a bookstore will pick up your book when it's not returnable (and CreateSpace is not), is small at best. Unless you are the next Amanda Hocking, they will go with something else to fill that wild card spot on their shelf.

5. There are many different options when it comes to ISBNs through CreateSpace. The options range from the simplest (you are assigned of their ISBNs for free) to publishing as your with your own imprint and purchasing an ISBN at $99. This is a convoluted topic. Do your research before making a decision.

Overall, I was impressed with CreateSpace's software, their commitment to making publishing easy for everyone, and the fact that they recognize they may not be the perfect publishing route for everyone - but they're ok with that. They strive to do the best they can for the authors that choose them.

Finally, here was the Quote of the Day summarizing one attendee's take-away:

"You don't have to pick one way or another (traditional, hybrid publisher, or self-publishing); you just have to have quality content."

Amen.

When was the last time you paused from your writing and
thought, “Who is my audience?” It seems like a simple question and one with an
immediate answer. But when you really stop and think about it you may find the
answer is more fuzzy than you thought.

Whether you’re writing blog posts, magazine articles, a book
or website copy, you have to know the audience for your words. Answering that
question will help you through the research, writing and editing phases of your
work.

For example, I’ve written a large number of articles for businesses
magazines and newspapers. I know the audience is a business crowd – educated people
with an understanding of phrases like “ROI” and “succession planning.” I don’t
need to waste words explaining these concepts in great detail.

Who is your audience?

A blog
post by literary agent Rachelle Gardner sums up this concept nicely: “Make
your blog about your reader.”

Sounds like “writing concepts for dummies,” but we can get
so caught up in our writing we tend to forget who we’re writing for and who’s
reading our work. Gardner points to “engagement” as a critical component of
your blog. That means getting people to not only read your blog once but come
back time and again. The same could be said for books, articles and other forms
of writing where were want to develop an audience – a group of people who truly
want to read what we have to write.

If you’re struggling to determine your audience, take a look
back over your work and see what generated the most response. This is easy to
do on a blog where you can measure hits and comments and certainly if you’ve
published a book you’ll know if people are buying and reading. What blog post,
for example, had a lot of comments? Did something in that post resonate with
your target audience?

Maybe you write simply as a hobby, a way to express yourself
creatively. That’s OK if the audience is you. Most of us, though, want readers,
people who will engage with us on this writing journey, but they can’t engage
with you if you’re not writing for them.

Do you struggle with determining your audience? In what ways
have you answered this question for yourself?

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an
opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your
endurance has a chance to grow ~ James 1:2-3 NLT

I've had a great deal of trouble in my
life. I grew up in a pretty tumultuous
household. My mother unknowingly married a man after my father that was sexually abusive.
My father spent the most impressionable years of my life in prison. I made some pretty outrageous choices in my
young adult life that lead to disastrous consequences for both me and my
children. I’ll spare the details. That could turn into a whole book…

Ten years ago, I found myself crying out to God: Why? Why has my life been so awful? Why can’t things seem to go right for
me? Why do I keep making the same stupid
choices? God, I need your help!! I quickly discovered that He had been waiting for me all along. Waiting for me to turn to Him. Waiting for me to let Him take control. Once I did, He turned every test into a testimony,
every mess into a message. Every ounce of trouble that has come my way, he has used to shape me into the woman I am today. He is using my past to help others who are
struggling with the same things.

What about you? Are
you facing trials? Are you in the middle
of something you are certain you cannot endure? Would you consider making
it an opportunity for great joy, trusting that God can use all of it for His
glory and for your testimony? Now, suffering
with joy does not mean that you don’t feel pain; it
simply means that you choose to trust him in spite of your pain. You choose to proclaim your love for Him in
spite of your circumstances. His word
says that He works ALL things out for good for those who love him! Will you choose JOY today?

When I was applying for internships and my first newspaper

easy to shrink a full-size newspaper down to a readable 8 x 11 sheet of paper.
Then I made copies of my resume, created a customized cover letter and put together
a packet of information to mail to prospective employers. It was time consuming
– and expensive.

Since being stuffed with turkey your blog hasn't been stuff with anything. Here are some great ways to get your writing grove back.

Participate in a link up:
Link up are a great way to not only write something, but meet other bloggers. Most bloggers out there host a link up or participate. Link ups are easy to use. There is normally some sort of writing prompt, a place to add your link, then a list of people who have "linked up" where you can ready what they have posted.

Read:
Reading goes a long way. Reading gets those wheels turning, rattles off the dust and can inspire you.

Journal/ Free writing:
I love these two! I not only have a blog, but keep an actual journal. The act of handwriting helps my brain focus. Many times I use my journal as a free writing tool. Free writing is a simple exercise where you just start to write with out any thought of structure. Sometimes when you read back over your writing you find some great quotes you can use, but most of the time is just random writing. It doesn't matter because it gets you writing again.

Let's have a Voices link up!

What are you looking forward to in 2013?

This weekend I had the pleasure of teaching a writer's workshop at Create:Saturday on the Seacoast Summerville Campus. The writers who attended the workshop were so excited about their writing, they inspired me in my own writing. What an unexpected gift.

One man at the workshop told me he is a Sci-fi writer, but really wants to write his autobiography. He told me about the unconventional childhood he'd had and how, despite it all, God had brought him through. In listening to his stories, I was truly mesmerized. The characters he described and the settings he told me about were captivating. I wanted to hear more about them, but our time was limited.

That conversation got me thinking. He will probably have a very hard time selling his memoir even though it will probably be better than most memoirs our there. Let's face it, when you query a memoir to an agent or editor, you get the "speech": Memoirs don't sell, unless, of course, they are the life story of a celebrity or some notorious character. Memoir writers often have to decide if they will push through the discouragement or give up altogether.

I would like to suggest a third option. (It's the same one I gave to this man at the workshop.)

Take the one of a kind characters and settings from your life and put them into a work of fiction.

Since this man is already a novelist, he understands story arc and pacing. If he drops in the rich characters and detailed settings only he has experienced, he could have the makings of a bestseller. Now he will have a whole different kind of query and a book that is a much easier sell to an agent or editor.

So how about it? Would you consider turning your memoir into a novel if it meant actually selling it to a publisher and seeing it in print?Jennifer Tubbiolohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15579656867482338666noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6973298017091599197.post-67453159720958367542012-11-29T19:18:00.000-08:002012-11-29T19:18:51.095-08:005 Actions You Should Take Before You Write Your Manuscript As Per Michael Hyatt
I just spent an hour on a teleseminar with Michael Hyatt... (and 10,000 of my closest friends). He spoke about the world of publishing as it is now, how to build a platform (based on his bestseller PLATFORM), the pros and cons of self-publishing, etc. One of the most valuable nuggets of wisdom he shared was:

5 Actions You Should Take Before You Write Your Manuscript

1. Set a specific written goal. What is it you want to do? (Your answer here would be: write your book.) When will it be done? (Yes, this is an ACTUAL DATE.) What is my end goal? (This is where you decide what you want to do with your manuscript when it's done. Such as traditional publishing or self-publishing.)

2. Accept responsibility for the outcome. The old adage of : "You get out of it what you put into it" applies here. No one can do it for you, so YOU do it for you. I appreciated that reminder.

3. Connect with your "Why". Why do you want...no... why MUST, you write this book? Write this out in bullet points. Michael told a story about how he grew discouraged at one point while writing Platform and actually considered giving the advance back to the publisher and ending the project. But instead, he went back to his written "Why" and it inspired him all over again to write his book. That spoke volumes to me and encouraged me to persevere in my goal.

4. Develop a writing schedule. Map it out. Put it on the calendar. Be committed to it.

5. Write a killer proposal. "A proposal is what gets everyone on board." - Michael Hyatt He said author should write the original proposal themselves first, so they have a clear direction for where their book is going. If you want to hire someone to re-write it for you before submitting it to agents/editors, that's fine. But write it first yourself.

I really enjoyed this free teleseminar. I highly recommend taking advantage of Michael's extensive publishing knowledge by participating if he offers one again. The best ways to find out about these teleseminar opportunities would be to follow his blog at www.michaelhyatt.com , follow him on twitter @michaelhyatt, or listen to his podcast.

I used to think gold was a simple word. One that described the color of
some kind of piece of jewelry that I would have wanted in high school.
In looking at the definition it confirms those thoughts, but provides so
much more insight:

gold /g?ld/

Noun

A yellow precious metal, the chemical element of atomic number 79,
valued esp. for use in jewelry and decoration, and to guarantee the
value of currencies

An alloy of this (ex. 9-carat gold)

A deep lustrous yellow or yellow-brown color

Coins or articles made of gold

Money in large sums; wealth

A thing that is precious, beautiful, or brilliant

I like this last definition of gold - a thing that is precious,
beautiful or brilliant. It changes my perspective of the word. It
challenges the value of the word in my head - makes me wonder what
exactly is gold in my life?

It isn't just the necklace my parents gave me so many years ago for my
16th birthday, the color of the leaves in the fall as they shift from
deep greens to reds and yellows, burning bright in the soft sunlight.
There is something deeper to this.

Gold is a thing that is precious, beautiful or brilliant. The title of
the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost seems to untrue. God
calls me precious. His beauty surrounds me and the verse describing the
very streets in heaven jumps to the front of my mind.

The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl.
The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass. -
Revelation 21:21

Have we reached a wrong conclusion?

Put things to a narrow definition.

There's a need to broaden our perspective,

change the angle in which we view.

Ask ourselves the question,

Is it possible that gold can stay?

and spoken word. I guess back then it wasn’t called
spoken word, but I did get first place in the talent portion – so I
gave up on the life of beauty pageants and stuck with the writing.
Here is your step by step guide to writing and publishing an ebook:

Step 1: Write the book.
I know this sounds like it would be obvious, but you would be surprised how many people never actually start writing their book because they aren't sure about the steps following the writing. If you are unsure how to start writing, read our post Just Start Writing. Once you have a written ebook to work with, publishing it is a lot easier!

Step 2: Pick a Great Title
It may seems reversed to pick your title after writing the book, but during the organization and writing of your ebook, the content can take a different direction than originally anticipated. This happens all the time and is normal. Picking a title at the end allows you to really get to nitty-gritty of the completed ebook. One thing to remember: because your book will be viewed on a tablet or e-reader, it's vitally important that your title grabs interest. The most successful ebooks have titles that tell the reader what the book can give them in the title. Such as "5 Ways to Make Money Blogging in 5 Days." (Not a real ebook of course, but I would buy it, wouldn't you?)

Step 3: Design a Cover
I can't stress enough the importance of having your cover professionally designed. Once again, someone browsing books on an e-reader is going to decide whether or not to read the information about your book by the title and by the cover of the book before they ever read a word of what the book is about. Find a reputable ebook cover designer either online, or from a personal recommendation and then don't settle. If you have to spend a little more money in the beginning to get the cover you want, DO IT. You will be happier with your product and it will sell significantly better in the end for the extra care you put into it.

Step 4: Have Your Ebook Digitized.
This is the step where you select a company to change your document into a usable digital format. Smashwords and CreateSpace are well known websites that can do this for you. Do your research here and make sure that the website you choose for this project fits into your overall publishing plan, not only for this book, but your future work.

Like I said...easy as 1,2,3. Let me be your cheerleader for a moment: YOU CAN DO IT! Really, you can. The hardest part is getting started, but remember, you have something to say and now, with ebooks, you have a forum for it.

Once this your book is ready to sell, it's time to think about marketing, promoting and selling your ebook...but, that's for a future post. Stay tuned...
Google Analytics. Blogger does have a tracing system with their blogs
but they also count spam hits and actual hits, so Analytics is a more
accurate count.

Google Analytics
is simple to set up. You sign in with your Gmail/Blogger account,
select your url type (most of you will be a single url) and add your
url. Then you simply add the tracking html code on to your blog and it will start tracking.

It will take a day for the numbers to show up, it refreshes every morning.

The next time you sign into Google Analytics you will see this crazy graph and chart.

The line graph shows you how many visitors you had each day, and the pic chart show you who was returning and who was new.

Have you ever felt paralyzed by your ideas? You have the
genesis for a book, short story or blog post but the idea doesn’t feel fully
formed so you decide to think on it. And think. And think. And think. In fact,
you may think on it so long you never even getting around to writing it. Or you
may sit down at the computer, hands poised over the keyboard ready to write, but
when the words don’t flow and the thoughts don’t gel in your mind, you get
frustrated.

In these situations look to Edgar Allan Poe and just write.
An article in the October issue of The Writer lays out Poe’s advice to writers
(“Advice from the crypt” by B.K. Stevens). While we know Poe wrote creepy poems
and haunting mysteries, he also wrote about the subject of writing.

The article notes:

The “mere” act of writing, Poe believed, helps writers make
their ideas not only clearer but more logical. To use his phrase, the process

It’s a rare situation that our work is perfect in the first
draft. We always go back and make edits or rearrange sentences. But you have to
have some words on the page before you can begin the editing process. So taking
that first step toward simply writing will set you on the path. No one has to
read that first (second or even third) draft so let the words flow onto the
page and you may just find that by picking up a pen or sitting at the keyboard
your thoughts will be begin to make sense.

I recently received an email from a woman in our writer's group. She has just about finished polishing her book and has chosen to self-publish. Her question to me was: Does it matter if I purchase an ISBN from my print on demand publisher and therefore have their name as the publisher on my book, or is it better if I create my own publishing imprint, purchase an ISBN myself, and avoid having their company listed as my publisher?

That's a great question.

(I'm going to work from the assumption that she is not a speaker who is printing this book just to sell at her speaking engagements, personal appearances, and on her website. In that case it wouldn't matter much who the publisher is. I'm going to further assume that she would like as wide a distribution as possible for her book.)

The answer to this question is as simple as: Do you want your book to be viewed as innocent until proven guilty or guilty until proven innocent?

The Guilty Until Proven Innocent Book:
As a book buyer, when a book is presented to me, one of the first things I look for is the publisher. If I see a print on demand company as the publisher of the book, it's a red flag that the product may be of lower quality or at the very least hasn't already been vetted by a trained eye. This book is now "guilty" in my eyes and needs to prove itself "innocent" of poor writing, poor editing and flawed information. If the topic seemed interesting, I will continue to browse the book, but now, the book has one strike against it and needs to convince me that it is a quality product.

The Innocent Until Proven Guilty Book:
Upon first examination of a new book, if I see the name of a publisher (or imprint) I don't recognize, I don't automatically turn it away. After all, there are many great Indie publishers out there and more are coming on the scene all the time. I will continue to look through the book. In my mind, this book is "innocent" so far, and won't be "guilty" in my mind until I see a topic that doesn't work for my store, poor writing, sloppy editing, etc. These books have a better chance with me and those are just the hard facts.

If at all possible, I encourage you to create your own imprint when working with print on demand publishers. Even if no one has ever heard of your imprint, you will be seen as a more serious writer, this book and subsequent books will be taken more seriously, and your chances of a wider distribution go up dramatically.Jennifer Tubbiolohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15579656867482338666noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6973298017091599197.post-50080075111424852402012-10-16T20:34:00.003-07:002012-10-16T20:35:14.841-07:003 Reasons You Should Participate in NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo is 15 days away!

Some of you are saying nano-what?

Na-No-Wri-Mo. Short hand for National Novel Writing Month. November is the month of the year in which novelists across the globe write with reckless abandon to attempt to reach the pre-set 50,000 word goal.

November is also the month of the year in which literary agents can be heard screaming from behind their laptops "Don't submit in December what you've written in November!" Because more often than not, what you have written for NaNoWriMo doesn't qualify as a full-length novel in most genres and because in most cases those 50K words need not just some, but a TON of work.

So, if you don't actually finish a full novel, and most of the time (especially for first time novelists) what you do produce is a really rough first draft; why on earth would you EVER consider trying to write 50K words in 31 short days?

Here are 3 really good reasons:

Reason #1. NaNoWriMo is a great time to throw out all the excuses you've given to date about why you haven't written that novel.

Reason #2. Participating in NaNoWriMo allows you to be a part of a global community of thousands of writers all attempting to write roughly 1667 words a day.

Reason #3. To actually achieve the 50K words, you have to get out of your own head and just write. It's tremendously freeing to be released from those pesky story arcs and massive self-editing as you go. This is the time to let your inner-story teller free!

If you have ever thought about participating in NaNoWriMo check out their website at www.nanowrimo.org and register today. I'll be right there with you.Jennifer Tubbiolohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15579656867482338666noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6973298017091599197.post-29354157180479976012012-10-10T06:03:00.002-07:002012-10-10T06:03:57.043-07:00Is ebook Publishing Right For Everyone?
The short answer is YES, you should – at some point in your

publishing specifically, NOT creating an ebook version of your new book in

my particular book and make it available to consumers?

The answer to this question requires a bit more information.

For instance, are the people you are targeting in this
particular book (your tribe) likely to download their books, or are they more
apt to stop in their local Barnes & Noble to pick it up? That is an important piece of information to
have. YOU may be personally savvy enough to download and read ebooks regularly,
but if the group of people you are trying to reach aren’t generally that tech savvy,
your sage wisdom or latest novel will never make it into their hands.

Full

ebook can help promote and sell books you may have published in paper/print.

You may be sold already by this list of advantages and be thinking
“Why would anyone not publish an ebook?” The answer has to do with your overall business plan as an author. If you are a professional consultant or
speaker, your primary goal may be to get your work into the hands of people you
speak to, or who use your materials.
Ebooks work well here. You don’t have to cart around boxes of books to
conferences, or ship and warehouse them yourself.

But, if you are a writer whose professional goals include having
your book on the New York Times bestseller list one day, you may find that goal
tougher to obtain by relying solely on ebook publishing. Here’s why:

Disadvantages:

· “Vanity Publishing”: Ebook publishing is still not held in
as high esteem as publishing your book through a traditional publisher. But this is changing and changing fast. In
August of this year, four self-published ebook authors landed on the NYT
Bestseller list in higher positions than well know print authors’ (such as
James Patterson) ebooks .

You are CEO: When it’s your ebook, the buck stops with
you. You are responsible for putting out a quality product. Your book will only be as good as the team
that you put together, and good teams cost money and some extra time. How much are you willing to pay in time and
money for a quality product?

 Marketing
and Social Media: When you
have put out a book you have to market it to let people know it’s out there.
This is no different for ebooks. You
will need to carve time out of writing the other areas of running the business
to market and connect on social media. However, social media is tremendously more
important for an ebook author. If you have determined that your “tribe” is tech
savvy, then the best way to reach them will be online. That requires time and
it requires it from you in the form of building online relationships.

Ebook publishing is on the rise because it is easy, profitable
and provide quick access for consumers. However,
you will only know if you should publish that ebook when you spend some time
looking at your professional goals and business plan to know if it is best for
you right now.
